Today Microsoft unfortunately announced that the much-anticipated Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is to be released in January 2008 instead of this Fall. This is the Mac version of Microsoft Office 2007, which has a new redesigned UI. This is not so great for people that are buying Macs for schoolwork.

It seems as though several manufacturers are trying to get away from Microsoft and into open source. I believe that they are sick of people complaining about Vista and Microsoft trying to make the rules for everything. It is just the beginning, a ripple in the pond, of what is Microsoft’s worst nightmare… losing the business model that worked so well for many years. It could also push Linux to the desktop as a consumer product. This is a great day for the open source community.
